Meeting of the
BOARD OF GOVERNORS
November 14, 2002
Agenda Item No. 11
STUDENT CONDUCT -- POLICY 20
The President has given notice that Policy 20 will be reviewed. This policy on student rights and responsibilities establishes the framework within which non-academic student misconduct is addressed by the College. The policy was initially adopted with technical amendments in March 2002 on the basis of the former State College System Series 57.
The existing policy provides for appeal processes, which culminate with review by the President of the College in all cases other than expulsions, in which case a student has a right of appeal to the Board, as was the case under the former governance structure.
The President and the Vice President for Student Affairs anticipate creating an open dialogue on the content of this policy as a part of the policy review process. A variety of changes in the policy may ultimately be recommended, based upon that dialogue. Based upon the prevailing pattern of appeals processes across the country, it is anticipated that the staff recommendation will ultimately include the elimination of an appeal of right to the Board in any case.
