Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is a society for students, dedicated to improving the appreciation of biology through scientific research. Since 1922, more than 175,000 persons have been accepted into lifetime membership, and more than 430 chapters have been established.

TriBetas ideal of wanting to stimulate interest among students of the life sciences is the foundation on which the organization has thrived. The Shepherd Colleges’ Rho Omega chapter is no different. We have developed a continual series of projects and programs designed to enlighten the Shepherd community of scientific developments. Examples include the formation of a lecture series at Shepherd, field trips to local research facilities, and regular trips to Costa Rica. The chapter also plans social activities that have included dinners at a professor’s residence, a touring of Lurry Caverns, and bike trips on the C & O canal. The chapter also stays active with community service projects, individual research, and the inevitable fundraising.

Like most organizations, TriBeta has their own official insignia with their associated meanings. These include the key, shield, colors (red for zoology and green for botany) and the societies flower, a red rose commonly referred to as American Beauty.

Below is an explanation of the symbolism of the key and shield.
