Auditions for production of operetta “Iolanthe” set for November 16

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Department of Music announces an open call audition for its spring production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta “Iolanthe,” or “The Peer and the Peri,” on Monday, November 16, at 7 p.m. in the Frank Center W. H. Shipley Recital Hall. The performances will take place February 12-14, 2016 in the Frank Center Theater.

Auditions are open to Shepherd students, faculty, staff, and members of the community. Those auditioning should come prepared to sing a music theater song, aria or art song, and bring the sheet music. An accompanist will be provided.

“Iolanthe” is a comic opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert that is a satire of British government and law. It was the seventh collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan, and it premiered at the Savoy Theatre in London November 25, 1882.

Dr. Rob Tudor, associate professor of music and chair, Department of Music, will direct this production. Tudor has more than 16 years experience directing opera and musical theater productions like “Chess,” “The Apple Tree,” “Ragtime,” “The Gondoliers,” and Shepherd’s recent productions of “Die Fledermaus,” “Avenue Q,” and “Dido and Aeneas.”
