A native of Missouri, Dow Benedict joined the faculty of the Shepherd University Department of Art in 1971. A former chair of the Department of Art, he currently serves as Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities and Professor of Sculpture. He holds an undergraduate degree in painting from Central Methodist University, and graduate degrees in both sculpture and printmaking from the University of Missouri and West Virginia University. He served as apprentice to sculptors James Clark and Donald Bartlett and as studio assistant to sculptor William Klapp and printmaker Frank Stack. His work is widely exhibited with recent exhibitions including the Ashby-Hodge Museum in Fayette, Missouri, The Blue Elephant in Frederick, Maryland, Avampato Discovery Museum in Charleston, West Virginia, Hickok and Warner in Washington, DC, The Art House in Leesburg, Virginia, The Salon de la Galerie d’art in Paris, France, the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, New Castle, Pennsylvania, and as the featured visual artist at the Contemporary American Theater Festival.
