SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University will present the 2016 TubaChristmas on Saturday, December 24, at 1 p.m. on the steps of McMurran Hall. This Christmas Eve concert is free and open to the public. Zack Corpus, University of Memphis doctoral student in tuba performance and director of orchestras at Arlington High School in Memphis, Tennessee, will serve as conductor.
Tuba and euphonium players of any skill level are welcome to participate. Registration for musicians begins at 10 a.m. in Reynolds Hall, with rehearsal beginning at 10:30 a.m. There is a small registration fee for musicians, which includes a collectible Tuba Christmas button. Musicians are encouraged to bring TubaChristmas music if they have it. Music and TubaChristmas merchandise will be available for purchase at the event.
The Family and Consumer Sciences and Historic Preservation programs at Shepherd, in conjunction with the Harvey Phillips Foundation, are sponsoring this event for the sixth year. Dr. Kathleen Corpus, associate professor of family and consumer sciences, and Dr. Keith Alexander, assistant professor of history, are organizing TubaChristmas.
“It has become a Shepherdstown tradition,” Corpus said. “There are a handful of musicians that have played in every Shepherdstown TubaChristmas so it has become a tradition for them as well.”
“Nothing says Christmas like brass music, and TubaChristmas is a sound like no other,” Alexander said. “I’m very pleased that this has become a Shepherdstown tradition, and the steps of McMurran is the perfect venue for this celebration of the season.”
