SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Departments of Psychology and Social Work are sponsoring a one-day aging well workshop titled “Healthy Brains and Minds: Biofeedback and Beyond” on Tuesday, May 12, from 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. The workshop will address the topics of how the brain changes as we age, alternative therapies, and prescription drug addiction.
The workshop will offer six continuing education credits for social workers and 5.5 contact hours for nurses and costs $50 for those attending for credit and $25 for those not getting credit, including lunch. The deadline to register is May 5.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Mary Lee Esty, whose peer-reviewed research in traumatic brain injury began with a National Institutes of Health-funded study published in “The Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation” in 2001. A follow-up study with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans was published in “The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences” in 2012. Her research in association with the U.S. Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences evaluating the efficacy of neurofeedback on traumatic brain injuries and posttraumatic stress disorder in soldiers from Walter Reed Army Medical Center continues.
Other presenters include Terry Cunningham, M.A., C.B.I.S., discussing The Boomer Consumer: Substance Abuse and Aging; Dr. Chris Lovelace, assistant professor of psychology at Shepherd, discussing The Changing Brain: How Understanding Changes in the Brain Helps Us to Understand Changing Behavior; Jeff Worth, R.N., L.Ac., an acupuncturist and owner of the Boonsboro Wellness Center, discussing Health and Longevity: Ancient Practices for a Modern People; and Dr. Ann Murtagh, associate professor of psychology and Department of Psychology co-chair, discussing Mindfulness: Making Each Moment Count.
