![]() Chris Stambaugh Chris Stambaugh returns for his eighth season as coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Shepherd College. A Shepherd graduate, Stambaugh has the distinction of being the only person to have played on a championship team (1988) and to be head coach of a championship team (2002 and 2003) in any sport at Shepherd College. A native of nearby Martinsburg, West Virginia, Stambaugh is also the Head Tennis Instructor at the Martinsburg Holiday Inn. Prior to coaching Shepherd, Stambaugh coached the girls and boys at Smithsburg (Maryland) High School from 1994-96. From 1994 to 2002, he was ranked the number one male singles player in the West Virginia district of the Mid-Atlantic Region. In the Mid-Atlantic, Stambaugh has finished in the top 20 in five of the last eight years. With his father Robert, the Stambaughs finished 1996, 1997, and 2000 as the number one ranked Father/Son doubles team in the Mid-Atlantic. "I love the game of tennis and I love to compete," says Stambaugh. "I've been in so many tournaments and competitive situations that I feel I can relate extremely well to what my players are going through, both physically and mentally. I know how badly I want to win when I play. I think it's advantageous for me to pass what knowledge I have on to my players. Hopefully, winning is the end result." Stambaugh started off winning at the very start of his Shepherd career as a freshman player in 1988. That year, the men's team stormed to an 18-2 record overall and captured the West Virginia Conference championship without much difficulty. Stambaugh won individual conference titles at number five singles and number two doubles with teammate Ferran Macipe. "Our team was absolutely loaded," Stambaugh says. "There were a lot of talented players with a lot of desire. I think that made everyone so confident. As a team, we just felt we could beat anybody. It was a wonderful situation to be in." The situation came full circle in 2002 when the men's team—now coached by Stambaugh— won the title for the first time since 1988. The year 2003 has proven to be the most successful year ever in Shepherd tennis history. The men's team repeated as conference champs, becoming the first Ram tennis team to win back-to-back titles; while Shepherd's women emerged with their own conference title in 2003 after a 16-year drought. As a coach, Stambaugh has winning records with both the men's and women's teams. Under his direction since 1997, the teams have combined for an overall record of 167-93 (.642). Stambaugh has also been named West Virginia Conference Coach-of-the-Year three times (2001, 2002, and 2003). Chris Stambaugh |
