![]() Jim Sweeney Sweeney's 2005 team rebounded from a slow start to record the best season in program history. The Rams won 10 of their last 13 games en route to an 11-10-1 record with a 5-3-0 conference mark. The 11 wins, five conference wins, and third place regular season ranking were all new Shepherd bests. Shepherd also had its best showing in the WVIAC Tournament when they advanced to finals before falling to Wheeling Jesuit. Sweeney's 2004 team tied school marks for most wins in a season (9) and most conference wins (4). His squad also set single game records for most goals in a game and largest margin of victory in a 20-0 win over Ohio Valley. Sweeney led the Rams to a then team-record nine wins in 2003. His squad also set a new mark for conference wins with four. The 2003 Rams were ranked third in NCAA II in scoring with a 3.85 per game average. Individually, Kyla Heimburger led NCAA II in assists with an 0.94 average, while Erin Wilkinson was second in goals (1.45 per game) and third in points (3.10 per game). Sweeney, a 1998 graduate of Albright College, was a four-year standout as a goalkeeper for the Lions. Sweeney broke numerous school records including most saves in a game (31), shutouts in a season (4), and career saves (698). He earned All-Conference honors at Albright and was a three-time team most valuable player. After graduation, Sweeney served as an assistant at Albright for the men's team for three years (1998-2000). The 1999 Albright team set a school record for most wins with 10. Sweeney also worked as an assistant girl's soccer coach at Conrad Weiser High School in Wernersville, PA. He helped guide the team to the Berks County Championship title in 2000. Sweeney has also had coaching stints with the Olympic Development Program in eastern Pennsylvania and most recently served as an assistant coach to both the men's and women's soccer programs at St. Edward's University in Austin, TX. He was the main assistant coach for the men's team, while working with the goalkeepers for both teams. Sweeney currently holds a United States Soccer Federation "A" License.
In addition to his coaching duties, Sweeney also serves as the director for the Shepherd University Wellness Center. Jim Sweeney ![]() Katie Martin Katie Martin enters her first year as assistant coach of the Shepherd women's soccer program. The former Katherine Leigh Stokes, Katie graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in May 2006, and married Tom Martin, a fellow UNCP graduate and soccer player. Martin played her freshman season at the University of South Carolina and transferred to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for her spring semester. Martin was a three year starter for UNCP, she played all over the field during her career, including forward, stopper, and sweeper. Her sophomore year, as forward, Martin tallied 12 goals ranking 6th in the conference in goals scored. Martin was voted the most valuable defender for the 2005-2006 UNCP squad and received all conference honors her senior year while playing sweeper. Martin was also named the Peach Belt Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the year for 2006. Katie served as team captain her 3 years at UNCP. Katie graduated with a GPA of 3.9 and is a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society and Psi Chi Psychology National Honor Society. In her spring semester 2006, Katie was the assistant coach of a U-14 challenge team from the Lumber River Youth Soccer Association. After graduation, in the summer of 2006 Katie held youth soccer camps for Jefferson County Parks and Recreation. Katie Martin |
