(SHIPPENSBURG, PA) -- John Kuhn rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries to lead Shippensburg University to a 35-7 win over Shepherd in The Great Valley Classic in football action at Seth Grove Stadium on Saturday.
The Red Raiders opened the scoring in the first quarter when Kuhn scored on a two-yard plunge with 7:59 remaining.
Shippensburg increased its lead to 14-0 when Tony Gomez connected with David Wilkerson on a 27-yard scoring play with 8:45 left in the half.
Shippensburg threatened right before the half with a first-and-goal at the six-yard line, but Shepherd's Dan Peters (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria HS) picked off a Rick Henshaw pass in the end zone with 49 seconds remaining.
Leonard Ferguson (Baltimore, MD/ Dunbar HS) teamed with Rodney Jackson (Severn, MD/Meade HS) on a 67-yard scoring strike with 12:11 left in the third quarter to pull the Rams to within seven points at 14-7.
Henshaw hooked up with Pat Ferguson on a 58-yard scoring play to increase the Red Raider lead to 21-7 with 7:31 left in the third quarter.
Shippensburg added a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns on an eight-yard run by Gomez and a 15-yard scamper by Kuhn.
The Rams defense was led by Peters with a game-high 14 tackles (8 solo). He also broke up two passes. Bobby Jarvis (Richmond, VA/Hermitage HS) recorded 11 stops (4 solo) and a tackle-for-loss.
John Sharbaugh and Mike Street led the Red Raider defense with eight tackles apiece.
Shepherd falls to 0-2, while Shippensburg improves to 2-0. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they host Slippery Rock for a 1:00 p.m. contest in the home opener.
