2001 Fairmont Invitational

Rams Ride Pierson and Masters to 3rd Place finish at Fairmont Invitational

Jason Pierson shot a two over par 72 as the Rams posted a team score of 303 at the Fairmont Invitational on Monday. Sophomore Mike Masters (Loudoun Valley HS) was second on the team with a score of 75. Ross Shapiro and Justin Pugh posted identical scores of 78 in the effort. This was the best tournament finish for the Rams this fall.

"The weather Sunday only allowed us to get three holes in. Rain and high winds hit hard and forced the tournament into a one day affair. We had never played the course before and the winds on Monday were fierce and unpredictable. Due to the weather many tees were temporally place and no set distances were known. Add about six blind shots either off the tee or from the fairway and the recipe is set for very high scores. I also might note that no range balls were allowed and therefore we went out really at a disadvantage. Host Fairmont (288) has been playing well this fall, add to that their home course and as expected, they bested us but only by 5 strokes. The real surprise was West Liberty who posted a 286 to win the event! Both teams got in nine holes on Sunday and had the course with less wind on Monday.

Overall I was really satisfied by our play. We beat both West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville who are top teams in the conference. We were more focused and we played to win from the beginning. A few errors basically blamed on yardage and wind were the real issues as we played to both more than the rest of the field. All other teams had played the course at least two years before. Mike is really coming on. Ross is solid as ever and both Jason and Justin had some really tough lip out putts and terrible lies. Both played at or just over par all round. Billy Clusman had a bad day and really is affected more when we don’t get the range time before a match. He is solid and i look for a great finish to the fall season at Eagles Landing at the end of the month."

Last Match of the Fall:

Eagles Landing, Ocean City, MD Saturday/Sunday October 27-28 a 20 team field with SC Tee Times TBA with first Tee set for 8 AM.
