DAVIS, WV --David Bradshaw continues to play stellar golf as he led the Rams to a team record 291 one day total (288 is par) on the second day of the WVIAC Central Regional. The feat occurred this past Tuesday as the Rams completed a two-day WVIAC Central Regional Third Place finish (590). On day two David shot a sizzling 70 (2 under par) to go with his first day 72 to pace a great effort by the team. Freshman Chris Butcher (Inwood, WV/Musselman) was 72-73, while Billy Clusman (Ijamsville, MD/ Urbana) fired a 73-74 to insure the third place WVIAC regional finish. Rounding out the second day record was Justin Hockman (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg) whose 100+ yard eagle on the 18th hole gave him a 74 stroke finish. David has shot par or under for all four rounds this fall (72-71/72-70). He also added his name to the best round total 2 under that was fired by senior Justin Pugh in 2001. David's two-day, two-under par performance netted him also all tournament honors for the second time in the first two tournaments of the year and bettered his just set record one under performance!
The team was bested in WVIAC play by Ohio Valley College (580), a senior dominant team, and perennial power Concord College (582). First place honors for the complete 14 team field went to Clarion University (Pa) with an unbelievable 572 team effort. The medalist, from Clarion, was Matt Guyton who fired a 10 under par 134 (67-67) for the event. His unbelievable showing literally carried Clarion to first place.
COACH'S COMMENTS: "I have never been so proud of a team as I was
yesterday. Not only did the guys play great golf, they also played it
with class. Many times we bounced back from adversity. After hole
number one Justin Hockman was at THREE over. His two over 74 was a
measure of his of determination and a strong will to succeed. David's
two day effort and four days of par or better scoring, with two all
tourney performances, places him on a level never seen at Shepherd
before. Chris Butcher's tenacity and fight in his first ever collegiate
event were also unbelievable. Playing even golf, he was stymied by TWO
bad bounces on two double bogey holes, his clawing back to one over and
almost even again, mark him as a truly stellar player. Billy Clusman,
the only junior on this team really responds well to the challenge to
put up great numbers. These two tournaments have seen the best efforts
of his career. The best part of watching these guys play is noting that
they know that they are even better. That is really something, and I
really think they might be right! These guys never complain and they
look forward to playing with an excitement that is unbelievable. I know
I am an eternal optimist, but with these guys I feel a confidence that
is both real and contagious. We all are looking forward to our next
tournament!"
The Rams will play again on October 14th at the Westminster
Invitational (PA).
