(INSTITUTE, WV) -- Shepherd University blanked West Virginia State, 34-0, in WVIAC football action at Lakin Field on Saturday.

Leonard Ferguson (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar HS) gave Shepherd a 7-0 lead at the half when he scored on a four-yard run with 7:29 remaining in the first quarter.

Alex Herbert (Monrovia, MD/Urbana HS), who rushed for a game-high 114 yards on 22 carries, sprinted 45 yards for a score with 12:06 left in the third quarter to give the Rams a 14-0 lead.

Fredy Del Villar (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley HS) forced a Yellow Jacket fumble and Todd Edmondson (Finksburg, MD/ Westminster HS) scooped it up and rambled 21 yards for a touchdown with 11:21 left in the third quarter.

Demetrius Weeden (Waldorf, MD/Westlake HS) scored on a four-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to increase the Ram lead to 28-0.

Dan Gallagher (Harrisburg, PA/ Central Dauphin HS) forced a State fumble and Brian (Beef) Baker (Richmond, VA/Varina HS) recovered in the end zone for the game's final score.

The Shepherd defense held State to a paltry 142 yards of total offense. The Rams set a new school single game record by limiting the Yellow Jackets to minus 21 yards rushing. This breaks the old mark of minus five yards set in 1990 against State.

Demar Atwood (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson HS) led the Ram defense with 18 tackles. He had three tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles, two sacks, and a pass breakup.

Shepherd improves to 2-3, 2-0 in WVIAC action, while West Virginia State falls to 1-5, 0-2. The Rams return to action next Saturday when the host Glenville State at 1:00 p.m. on Hall of Fame Weekend.
