SHEPHERD WINS WVIAC TITLE CHARLESTON, WV -Shepherd College only won one individual flight and one doubles flight, but the Rams' depth won out as SC held off Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan in a tight WVIAC Women's Tennis Championship. Shepherd finished with 24 points to finish one point ahead of Charleston. West Virginia Wesleyan was third with 22 points and defending champion West Liberty finished fourth at 16. Concord rounds out the top five with 14 points. West Liberty's LeAnn McGhee was the conference's Player of the Year after a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over Charleston's Danielle Warner in #1 singles. West Virginia State's John Simms, Shepherd's Chris Stambaugh, and WV Wesleyan's Matt Bowman were named tri-Coaches of the Year in a vote by their peers. Junior Tracy Fries (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) took the number three singles crown with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Brandi Mooney of West Liberty. Fries and senior Leigh Burch (Landsdowne, VA/Potomac Falls HS) were runners-up at number two doubles, falling to Kristin Bryant and Ashley Crank of Charleston, 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Jennifer Kastle (Charles Town, WV/Jefferson HS) was runner-up at number four singles, dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Rachel Scribner of West Virginia Wesleyan. Kastle teamed with freshman Jessi Clarke (Hedgesville, WV/ Hedgesville HS) to capture the number three doubles crown with a 6-2, 6-2 over Nikki Keith and Joanna Thomas of Concord. The win is the first conference title for the Shepherd women's tennis program since 1987. TEAM STANDINGS:
