SHEPHERD FALLS TO WHEELING JESUIT IN WVIAC FINALS

WHEELING, W.Va. --Wheeling Jesuit claimed their second straight WVIAC Women's Soccer Tournament championship with a 3-1 win over Shepherd at Wheeling Island Stadium. The Cardinals, winners of 22 straight contests versus league foes, couldn't pull away from the pesky Rams until late despite a 23-1 edge in shots.

Lindsay Getz gave WJU the lead for good as her rebound shot found the back of the net of the 65th minute. Meghan O'Rourke provided insurance for the Cards as she took a pass from Katie Groff and scored in the 84th minute.

Neither team scored in the opening half before Getz opened the scoring in the 54th minute off a pass from Katelyn Miracle. Shepherd tied the game only four minutes later as freshman forward Jennifer Corkran (Baltimore, MD/ Sparrows Point HS) tallied for the Rams.

Sophomore netminder Amy Bell (New Market, MD/Linganore HS) made nine saves for Shepherd, who closes their season at 11-10-1. Wheeling Jesuit moves to 20-3 and awaits the verdict of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Committee on a likely post-season bid. The 32-team national tournament field will be set on Monday. The Cardinals were ranked fourth in last week's final regular season Great Lakes Region poll and are expected to grab one of the four slots in the NCAA Tournament from the region.

Notes: Shepherd completed its finest season with a school-record 11 wins. The Rams also posted a winning season for the first time in program history.
