SWEENEY LEADS SHEPHERD PAST CHARLESTON

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Brittany Sweeney (Rockville, MD/Magruder HS) scored a pair of goals to lead Shepherd University a 3-1 win over University of Charleston in WVIAC women's soccer action at Charleston on Wednesday afternoon.

Sweeney opened the scoring on at the 44:00 mark when she scored on a penalty kick to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

Shepherd increased its lead to 2-0 when junior forward Jamie Barthelemy (Leesburg, VA/Stone Bridge HS) scored on a feed from senior midfielder Tara Roberts (Knoxville, MD) at the 49:00 mark.

The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 2-1 on an unassisted goal by Michelle Baird at the 81:00 mark.

Sweeney clinched the game for the Rams when she scored on an open net in the 89th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Amy Bell (New Market, MD/Linganore HS) recorded six saves for the Rams.

Shepherd improves to 8-8-1, 4-2-0 in conference play, while Charleston falls to 2-13-0, 1-4-0. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host to Wheeling Jesuit for a 1:00 p.m. game.
