SHEPHERD DOWNS SOUTHERN VIRGINIA IN HOME OPENER, 5-1

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Freshman forward Jennifer Corkran (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point HS) scored three goals to lead Shepherd University to a 5-1 win over Southern Virginia in the home opener for the Rams in women's soccer action at Ram Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Tara Roberts (Knoxville, MD) gave the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 39:32 mark on an unassisted tally.

Southern Virginia tied the game at the 43:40 mark when Susie Jex scored with the assist coming from Lindsie Butler.

Corkran scored her three goals over a 16-minute period of the second half to seal the win for the Rams. Freshman midfielder Kellie Wagner (Winchester, VA/Sherando HS) assisted on two goals, while sophomore midfielder Lauren Kinnear (Bel Air, MD/Fallston HS) aided on another.

Junior Katie Moore (Shenandoah Junction, WV/Jefferson HS) scored the game's final goal on a feed from freshman defender/midfielder Heather Wright (Bunker Hill, WV/Musselman HS) at the 81:11 mark.

Sophomore goalkeeper Amy Bell (New Market, MD/Linganore HS) recorded four saves in goal for the Rams. Mary Ertel had four saves for Southern Virginia.

Shepherd improves to 1-3-1 on the year, while Southern Virginia drops to 2-3-0. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel host Davis & Elkins for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
