(WEST LIBERTY, WV) -- Shepherd University downed West Liberty, 38-7, in WVIAC football action at Russek Field on Saturday.

Shepherd opened the scoring at the 10:19 mark of the first quarter when senior quarterback Leonard Ferguson (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar HS) scored on a five-yard run.

The Rams extended their lead to 14-0 when senior Ron Frazier (Rockville, MD/ Gaithersburg HS) blocked a West Liberty and senior Chad Pence (Harrsionburg, VA/Turner Ashby HS) scooped it up and dashed 42 yards for a score.

Shepherd took a 20-0 lead with 2:09 left in the first quarter when Ferguson teamed with senior wide receiver Jesse Correll (Port Republic, MD/ Calvert HS) on a 26-yard scoring strike. The point after attempt by sophomore Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem HS) was no good.

The Rams made it a 28-0 lead with 11:28 left in the second quarter when Ferguson connected with freshman wide receiver Chadd Wood (Monmouth Junction, NJ/ Potomac State) on a 26-yard scoring strike. Sophomore defensive back Dan Peters (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria HS) hit sophomore fullback John Hinton (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson HS) for the two-point play.

Schmitt drilled a 27-yard field goal with 5:38 left in the third quarter to increase the Ram advantage to 31-0.

Senior running back Alex Herbert (Monrovia, MD/Urbana HS), who rushed for game-high 166 yards on 24 carries, scored on a five-yard run with 13:03 left in the fourth quarter.

The Shepherd defense was led by senior linebacker Demar Atwood (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson HS) with 12 tackles.

Notes: Alex Herbert became just the fourth player in program history to reach the 3,000 yard rushing mark. Herbert now has 3,118 career rushing yards. He needs 126 yards to move past Gregg Warfield (3,244 -1975-78) into third place on the Shepherd all-time rushing yards list.
