BOBCATS EDGE SHEPHERD, 62-57
BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Frances Carvajal scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead West Virginia Wesleyan to a 62-57 win over Shepherd University in WVIAC women's basketball action at Wesleyan on Saturday.
Sarah Grab and Julie Bell added 12 points apiece for West Virginia Wesleyan.
Junior forward Casey Landrum (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) scored a team-high 19 points to lead Shepherd. Landrum hit on 8-of-13 field goals and was 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. She also tied freshman forward Laura Harkins (York, PA/Spring Grove HS) for team-high rebounding honors with nine.
Senior guard Lindsay Stewart (Romney, WV/Hampshire HS) came off the bench to score a season-high nine points. Stewart tied Harkins, senior guard Anna Lashway (Guilford, VT/Brattleboro Union HS), and freshman guard Molly Land (Hope, IN/Hauser HS) for team-high assist honors with three.
The contest featured 16 lead changes and seven ties. The Bobcats took the lead for good at 48-46 at the 8:49 mark on a jumper by Sarah Grab. Shepherd got to with one point twice in the game's final minutes. Stewart hit a three-pointer at the 3:02 mark to cut the lead to 56-55. After a Crystal Johnson layup, Landrum hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 58-57 at the 1:55 mark. Grab hit a layup and added a pair of free throws in the game's final moments to seal the win for the Bobcats.
Shepherd falls to 11-15 overall, 10-8 in conference play, while West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 16-11, 11-7. Shepherd, the number six seed, will host 11th-seeded Alderson-Broaddus on Monday night at the Butcher Center at 7:30 p.m. in first round action of the WVIAC Tournament.
