WHEELING JESUIT EDGES SHEPHERD, 79-75
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Sarah Setcavage scored 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Wheeling Jesuit to a 79-75 win over Shepherd University in quarterfinal action of the WVIAC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center.
Shepherd held a 46-38 lead at the break behind strong first half efforts from sophomore guards Molly Land (Hope, IN/ Hauser HS) and Tiffany Acker (Mount Solon, VA/ Buffalo Gap HS).
Land poured in 17 points behind a 5-of-6 effort from beyond the arc, while Acker added 15 points on a 6-of-8 shooting performance, including a 2-for-4 effort from three point range.
"This is the best game we have played in Charleston in a long time," stated Shepherd head coach Jodie Runner.
Land and Acker finished with 17 points each to pace the Rams, while senior center LaToya Fisher (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley HS) added 14 points and a team-six rebounds.
"I am very proud of our team," added Runner. "We have come a long way from last year (12 wins) to a winning season this year (16-13). I am especially proud of Casey (Landrum) and Toya (Fisher) for all they have done for the program. We are going to miss them."
Katie Repicky added 18 points, while Lindsey Piar tossed in 15 for the Cardinals. Jade Eckenberry dished out a game-high seven assists.
"Shepherd played a great game," said Wheeling Jesuit head coach Joe Key. "They had us on our heels in the first half. I told our girls we would have to play better defense in the second half and we did."
Shepherd completes its season at 16-13, while Wheeling Jesuit improves to 26-3 on the year. Wheeling Jesuit, ranked fifth in the region, advances to face the winner of the West Virginia Wesleyan-Charleston game on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the semifinals.
