STATE HOLDS OFF SHEPHERD

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Carmella Suggs scored a game-high 22 points to lead West Virginia State to an 80-69 win over Shepherd College in quarterfinal action of the WVIAC Women's Basketball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center on Wednesday.

State jumped out to a 48-31 advantage at the half behind a 17-point effort from Doye Byrd.

Shepherd rallied in the second half to get to within six points twice in game's final minutes, but State hit on 9-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the win

Byrd added 19 points, LaRhonda Garrett had 12, and Kera Hill had 10 for the Lady Jackets. Teena Jackson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Gaynell "Nippy" Reese (Maple Heights, OH/Bedford HS) led the Rams with 15 points. Ashley Van Norden (Hagerstown, MD/Williamsport HS) and LaToya Fisher (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley HS) added 14 points each. Lindsay Stewart (Romney, WV/Hampshire HS) added 10 points and six assists. Cassie Murray (Cumberland, MD/Allegany HS) contributed eight points, eight rebounds, six assists, four steals, and two blocked shots.

Shepherd completes its season with an 18-11 mark.

Notes: Cassie Murray completes her career ranked second on the Shepherd all-time scoring list with 1,494 points. Her 768 career rebounds ranked her fifth, while 248 assists placed eighth on the all-time assist chart. She holds SC career marks for steals (224) and blocked shots (104). Ashley van Norden dished out 329 career assists to place fourth on the all-time list.
