STATE KNOCKS OFF SHEPHERD

INSTITUTE, WV -- Teena Jackson scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead West Virginia State to an 80-69 win over Shepherd College in WVIAC women's basketball action on Monday night at State.

Jackson scored 13 points in the first half to help State to a 43-33 halftime lead. She finished the night with a 9-of-12 shooting effort from the floor. Carmella Suggs (13 points), Doye Byrd (12), and Kera Hill (10) were also in double figures for the Lady Jackets. Byrd added eight boards, while Suggs posted a game-high six steals.

Casey Landrum (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) led the Rams with team-highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Cassie Murray (Cumberland, MD/Allegany HS) added 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots, and a pair of steals. Carrie Kunkel (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) and Ashana Cowans (Fairfax, VA/Robinson HS) added 12 points each, while Ashley van Norden (Hagerstown, MD/Williamsport HS) dished out a game-high five assists.

Shepherd falls to 5-5 overall, 1-1 in conference action, while West Virginia improves to 9-2, 4-0. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 5:15 p.m. contest.
