SHEPHERD DEFEATS STATE
INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Makia Staves (Bishop McNamara/Ft. Washington, MD) and Ashana Cowans (Robinson/Fairfax, VA) each scored 10 points to lead Shepherd College to a 69-43 win over West Virginia State in WVIAC women's basketball action on Monday night.
Brianne Hamilton (St. Maria Goretti/Martinsburg, WV) added nine points, while Ashley van Norden (Williamsport/Hagerstown, MD) and Gail Siemer (Cheaspeake/Severna Park, MD) each poured in eight. Siemer also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Barb Oller chipped in with five points, six assists, and four steals.The Rams turned in another fine defensive effort, limiting the Lady Jackets to a 30 percent shooting performance from the floor. No State player hit for double figures in the contest.
Jaime Adkins led the Lady Jackets with nine points and six rebounds, while Jenna Shantz added eight points and had a game-high eight rebounds.
Shepherd improves to 13-5, 9-2 in conference action, while West Virginia State falls to 5-12, 3-7. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Ohio Valley for a 6:00 p.m. contest at the Butcher Athletic Center.
