SHEPHERD EDGES FAIRMONT STATE

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Cassie Murray (Cumberland, MD/Allegany HS) scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Shepherd College to a 70-68 win over Fairmont State in WVIAC women's basketball action at Shepherd on Saturday afternoon.

Fairmont held a 66-63 lead with 2:03 remaining on a pair of Kristen Gattuso free throws. Shepherd retook the lead at 67-66 when LaToya Fisher (Germantown, MD/ Seneca Valley HS) drained a jumper with 50 seconds remaining. Murray added a pair of free throws to extend the Ram lead to 69-66 with 24 seconds left. Fairmont's Erin Fantroy hit a jumper just inside the three-point line with six seconds left to cut the lead to 69-68. Ashley van Norden (Hagerstown, MD/Williamsport HS) hit a free throw with two seconds left and Erica Rome's three-point attempt missed as time ran out.

Gaynell Reese (Maple Heights, OH/Bedford HS), Lindsay Stewart (Romney, WV/Hampshire HS), and van Norden each added 10 points. Van Norden dished out a a game-high six assists, while Fisher tied Murray for game-high rebounding honors with seven.

Kristen Gattuso led Fairmont with a game-high 20 points. Fantroy added 19 and Sidney Thomas had 12.

Shepherd improves to 9-6 overall, 2-1 in conference play, while Fairmont falls to 10-3, 3-2. The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to Alderson-Broaddus for a 5:15 p.m. contest.
