SHEPHERD FALLS TO CONCORD

Senior Jennifer Westervelt scored a team-high 17 points against Concord.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Crystal Kestner scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Concord College to a 69-62 win over Shepherd College in quarterfinal women's basketball action of the WVIAC Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.

Kestner connected on 7-of-10 shots from the floor and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Jennifer Pollinger added 19 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Lions.

"It was a total team effort, no doubt about it," said Concord head coach Kenny Osborne. "We had three players in double figures and got some help off the bench. We passed well and cut well to get good shots. The big thing was that we hit 22-of-24 from the line, that's how you win at tournament time."

Shepherd was led by Jennifer Westervelt (John Carroll/Bel Air, MD) with 17 points. Cassie Murray (Allegany/Cumberland, MD) added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Ashley van Norden (Williamsport/Hagerstown, MD) had 11 points and five assists. Makia Staves (Bishop McNamara/Ft. Washington, MD) recorded a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with five points.

"We've had a good season, " noted Shepherd head coach Betsy Blose. "Nineteen and nine is the second best season in school history. Concord deserves all the credit. They played hard and outworked us at times. We couldn't get stops defensively when we needed them, and we didn't shoot well. We don't like coming down every year and losing. It is not acceptable, but I am proud of what this group has accomplished this year."

Shepherd completes its season with a 19-9 record, marking the fourth straight year that the Rams have won 19 games or more. Concord improves to 14-14 and advances to play the winner of the West Liberty-WVU-Tech game on Friday.
