BOWIE, Md. -- Mona-Gail Baker scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Bowie State to a 69-65 win over Shepherd College in women's basketball action in the championship game of the Best Western Holiday Classic at Bowie State University.
Shepherd was led by All-Tournament selection Cassie Murray (Allegany/Cumberland, MD) with 21 points and seven rebounds. Makia Staves (Bishop McNamara/Ft. Washington, MD) posted her second straight double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Gaynell Reese (Bedford/Maple Heights, OH) came off the bench to add 11 points.
Shepherd rallied to within 67-65 in the games's final minute behind a pair of jumpers from Reese, but Baker hit a pair of free throws and made a steal to seal the win for the Lady Bulldogs.
Also in double figures for Bowie State were Allyson Hardy with 17 points and Tamara Barnes with 11.
Shepherd falls to 5-2 on the year, while Bowie State, who avenged a 65-43 loss to the Rams on December 4, improves to 5-6.
The Rams will return to action on January 3 when they host Bloomsburg University for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
