PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Two members of the Shepherd College women's basketball team were recently honored by the West Virginia Conference. Sophomore guard Cassie Murray (Allegany/Cumberland, MD) and senior forward Makia Staves (Bishop McNamara/Fort Washington, MD) received All-WVIAC honors.
Murray, a first team selection for the second straight year, led the Rams in scoring (11.6 ppg) and blocked shots (1.1 bpg). She also topped the team in three-pointers with 26. She was third on the team in rebounding (6.0 rpg) and assists (1.5 apg). Murray joins Jennifer Chapman (1999, 2000) as the only players in program history to win first team honors twice.
Staves, a second team choice, was second on the team in both scoring (9.8 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg). She led the team and was fourth in the WVIAC in field goal percentage with a .505 (92-182) mark. She is currently ranked ninth on the SC all-time rebounding chart with 619 career rebounds and 17th on the all-time scoring list with 806 points. Staves earned WVIAC honorable mention honors as a junior.
Shepherd finished the regular season with an 18-8 mark with a 13-5 record in conference play. The Rams, the number three seed, host Bluefield State tonight at 7:30 p.m. The winner will face the winner of tonight's Charleston-Concord game in the quarterfinal round of the WVIAC Tournament in Charleston on Wednesday.
