(RICHMOND, VA) -- Freshman quarterback John Cates completed 18-of-24 passes for 322 yards and five touchdowns to lead Virginia Union to a 35-7 win over Shepherd College in football action at Hovey Field.

Cates tossed a pair of scoring strikes to both Jerome Leslie and Rodney Terry. He also teamed with Tremayne Hill of his final touchdown pass.

Redshirt-freshman Dan Chlebowski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim HS) completed 6-of-12 passes for 67 yards for the Rams, including an eight-yard scoring pass to sophomore wide receiver John Dominguez (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac HS) for Shepherd's pnly score.

Senior defensive back Matt Meadows (Romney, WV/Hampshire HS) led the Ram defense with a game-high 10 tackles.

Shepherd falls to 0-2, while Virginia Union improves to 1-2.
