(PETERSBURG, VA) -- Virginia State held off Shepherd University for a hard fought 13-8 victory in football action at Rogers Stadium on Saturday.

The Trojans took a 7-0 lead into the intermission when Lamar Blizzard connected with P.J. Berry on a 21-yard score with 1:55 left in the first quarter.

Virginia State increased its lead to 13-0 with 6:04 left in the third quarter when Blizzard teamed with Jerome Jeter on an 83-yard scoring strike. Gus Macfoy (Lanham, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt HS) blocked the extra point.

Shepherd got a pair of third quarter field goals of 21 and 27 yards from Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem HS) to cut the deficit to 13-6.

Ramal Faunteroy (Washington, DC/Parkdale HS) tackled Dennis Jones in the end zone for a safety with 7:51 remaining in the game to cut the lead to 13-8. Faunteroy was credited with six tackles, including two for loss. He also recovered a fumble.

Shepherd later drove down the field to gain a first and goal at the nine-yard line, but couldn't reach the end zone.

Alex Herbert (Monrovia, MD/Urbana HS) rushed for a career-high 35 carries for a game-high 147 yards for the Rams. Dennis Jones rushed for 77 yards on 23 carries for the Trojans.

Ferguson completed 11-of-32 passes for 120 yards in his first start at quarterback for the Rams. Blizzard hit on 11-of-25 passes for 174 yards for Virginia State.

Jesse Correll (Port Republic, MD/Calvert HS) led the Ram receivers with eight receptions for 87 yards. Jeter had catches for 127 yards for State.

Demar Atwood (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson HS) tied State's Omar Grandson for game-high tackling honors with eight stops. Ron Frazier (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg HS) added seven tackles.

Shepherd falls to 0-1, while Virginia State improves to 1-0.
