SMITH NAMED SHEPHERD VOLLEYBALL COACH

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University director of athletics Karl Wolf announced today that Sarah Smith has been hired as the new women's volleyball coach for the Rams.

Smith comes to Shepherd after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Minnesota State Mankato. Smith was responsible for scouting opponent defenses, video editing, and skills instruction with emphasis on the middle hitters. She was active in fund raising and event management. In addition, she was in charge of the summer camps and also served as director of the Mankato Junior Youth Program.

Smith is a 2003 graduate of Bryant College with a B.S. in business administration with concentrations in management and history. A standout student, Smith earned a Pell Medal for United States history. She earned her master's degree in sports administration from Minnesota State Mankato in 2005.

A four-year starter in volleyball at Bryant, Smith helped lead the Bulldogs to four consecutive NCAA appearances. She was ranked among the top ten in NCAA II in services aces as a freshman and earned All-Region honors as a senior. Smith finished her career with 1,266 kills (fifth all-time), 276 service aces (third all-time), 1,378 digs (fourth all-time), and 241 blocks (fifth all-time), becoming only the second player in school history to finish in the top ten in five different categories.
