(SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV) -- Ryan Daniel nailed a 38-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining in regulation to lift Slippery Rock University to a 30-27 win over Shepherd University in football action at Ram Stadium.

The Rams moved out to a 7-0 early in the first quarter when senior running back Alex Herbert (Monrovia, MD/Urbana HS) scored on a two-yard run at the 12:11 mark.

The Rock answered back minutes later on a one-yard pass from Nate Crookshank to Joe Habarka. Slippery Rock took a 14-7 lead with two seconds left in the first quarter when Josh Kneiss galloped in for a 17-yard score.

Kneiss scored on a nine-yard scamper with 14:32 left in the half to give The Rock a 20-7 lead. Daniel missed the extra point attempt.

Sophomore free safety Dan Peters (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria HS) picked off a Crookshank pass and raced 34 yards for a score to get the Rams to within six points at 20-14 with 11:09 left in the second quarter.

Kneiss scored his third touchdown of the day with 2:38 left in the half on a four-yard run to give Slippery Rock a 27-14 lead.

Junior return specialist Dustin Dudinski (Woodbridge, VA/Park View HS) fielded a Ray Rotell punt at his own 22-yard line, cut left, and raced 78 yards at 11:13 mark for a score to cut the deficit to 27-21.

Peters added his second touchdown of the day when he returned a interception 78 yards for a score with 3:55 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 27-27. The point after attempt by Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/ Salem HS) was blocked by Jesse Kelley.

Assad Allen picked off a Leonard Ferguson (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar HS) pass at the Shepherd 49-yard line and returned it to the Shepherd 29-yard line to set up the game-winning goal. Willie Murel intercepted a Ferguson pass in the game's final minute to seal the win.

Kneiss rushed 32 times for a game-high 142 yards and three scores to lead The Rock. Herbert led the Rams with 15 yards rushing.

Ferguson completed 17-of-35 passes for 220 yards and four interceptions for the Rams, while Crookshank completed 8-of-16 passes for 52 yards with three interceptions.

Shepherd falls to 0-3, while Slippery Rock improves to 1-2. The Rams will have a week off before hosting Fairmont State in the conference opener on September 25 for a 1:00 p.m. game at Ram Stadium.
