SHEPHERD GOES 2-3 AT WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN TOURNAMENT

SALEM, VA --Shepherd went 2-3 in softball action at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, Virginia. The Rams dropped a 5-4 decision to Mountain State University late Friday night before blanking Davis & Elkins, 6-0 , and then dropping a 3-1 game to Mountain State on Saturday.

Mountain State scored in the bottom of the seventh inning on an infield error and a pair of singles to take a 5-4 win.

Tamara Chow scored the game-winner on a single from Bre Harper.

Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) went 2-3 with an RBI-double to lead the Rams.

Katie Rains gained the win for Mountain State, while Zappacosta took the loss.

Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) scattered four hits to gain a 6-0 win over Davis & Elkins. Carrie Egress took the loss.

Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) went 3-for-4 , while Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) and JoJo Small (Old Fields, WV/Frankfort HS) each added a pair of hits to pace the Rams.

Mountain State scored two unearned runs in the first inning en route to a 3-1 win in the final tournament contest for the Rams. Tamara Chow and Erica Bond each scored runs and Erica Hall went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Mountain State.

Zappacosta was 1-for-3 with a double and scored Shepherd's only run on an RBI single off the bat of Alyssa Rowe (Enhaut, PA/Central Dauphin HS) in the second.

Natalie Hanson picked up the win, while Zappacosta took the loss.

Zappacosta and Zahnow were named to the All-Tournament for the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 13-15 overall. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Glenville for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
