SHEPHERD GOES 1-1 AT TOURNAMENT

SALEM, VA --Shepherd College downed Glenville State 9-4, and dropped a 4-1 decision to West Liberty in first day action of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, Virginia.

Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS), Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS), and Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) each had three hits to lead the Ram attack. Small drove in three runs, while Zappacosta drove in a pair.

Brandi Richards went 3-for-3 and Talicia White scored a pair of runs to lead the Pioneers.

Zappacosta improved to 5-3 with the win, while Kelly Drinkard took the loss for Glenville.

Martinsburg High graduate Tabi Merceruio fanned nine Rams and scattered four hits to West Liberty to a 4-1 triumph.

Carla Krieg went 2-for-3 and Jenna Sims drove in a pair of runs to lead the Hilltoppers.

Shepherd scored its only run in the sixth when Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) reached base on a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Erika Nagy (Damascus, MD/Damascus HS), and scored on double by Zappacosta.

Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) (2-5) took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 12-13 overall. The Rams compete on Saturday in final day action tournament action.
