SHEPHERD SPLITS WITH WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. -- Shepherd University split with West Virginia Wesleyan in WVIAC softball action at Wesleyan on Saturday. The Bobcats won game one with a 7-2 triumph, while Shepherd rallied for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd rallied with five runs on six hits in the seventh inning to gain the win in the nightcap. A two-run single by junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) highlighted the rally.

Sophomore pitcher Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) gained the win for the Rams and reliever Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) picked up the save. Cory Karcesky took the loss for the Bobcats.

Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS), junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS), and Zappacosta each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.

Kareen Bilotta was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Bobcats.

Alyssa Miller went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead Wesleyan to a 7-2 win in game one.

Brittany Sphar scattered four hits and fanned seven en route to her 12th win of the season. Ram starter Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) fell to 3-2 with the loss.

Shepherd moves to 19-11, 13-4 in WVIAC play, while West Virginia Wesleyan is now 28-15, 15-1. The Rams continue on Sunday when they travel to Davis & Elkins for a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
