SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan swept a doubleheader from Shepherd College in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd. The Bobcats earned a 12-0 win in the first game and a 7-0 triumph in the nightcap

Wesleyan starter Adrienne Mertz scattered four hits to pick up the win in game one. Shepherd starter Jill Hood (Middletown/Middletown, MD) took the loss.

The Bobcats took control of the game with four runs in the third inning. Wesleyan knocked three hits and took advantage of three Shepherd walks to gain a 5-0 advantage. After scoring a run in the fifth, the Bobcats added six more runs in the sixth to gain the early win due to the eight-run rule after five innings.

Amanda Butts (Musselman/Gerarrdstown, WV) led the Rams at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with a pair of doubles. Chrissy Ashley (Loudoun Valley/Lovettsville, VA) and Shannon Smiles (Williamsport/Hagerstown, MD) each added singles.

Danielle Salmons fired a one-hitter to lead the Bobcats to a 7-0 win in game two. Shepherd's Christee Anderson (Martinsburg/Kearneysville, WV) suffered her first loss of the year to fall to 2-1.

Amanda Fleming's (Hancock/Hancock, MD) single in the second was the only hit for the Rams.

Rayner Balciunas led the Bobcats at the plate with a 6-for-6 day. Alyssa Miller added four hits, while Bethany Horton and Lacy Stallings each had three.

Shepherd falls to 4-3, 2-2 in conference play, while West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 7-9, 4-0. The Rams will host Davis & Elkins on Sunday with doubleheader action starting at 1:00 p.m.
