Mia Zappacosta tossed a two-hitter to gain her eighth win in game one.

SHEPHERD SWEEPS TECH

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV-- Shepherd University swept WVU-Tech in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd in the regular season home finale on Thursday afternoon. The Rams gained a 12-3 win in game one and handed the Golden Bears a 22-0 defeat in the nightcap.

Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) went 2-for-3, drove in four runs, and scored twice to lead the Rams to a 12-3 win in game one. JoJo Small (Old Fields, WV/Frankfort HS) was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS), Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS), Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS, Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS), and Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) each added a hit.

Holli Cheek and Bobbi Kinison each had singles for Tech.

Zappacosta tossed a two-hitter to gain her eighth win of the year. She also tied her career-high with eight strikeouts. Tech starter Amber Carroll took the loss.

Shepherd scored a season-high 22 runs in a 22-0 win in the nightcap.

Erika Nagy (Damascus, MD/Damascus HS), Brooke Small, and Megan Zahnow each had a pair of hits for the Rams in the nightcap. Nagy and Small had three runs batted in each, while Zahnow scored three times.

The Rams plated 14 runs on seven hits in the second inning to pull away for the win. Zahnow's two-run triple highlighted the outburst.

Kinison, Cheek, Jill Little, and Amber Carroll each had singles for Tech.

Shannon Leighty evened her record at 3-3 with the win. Leighty fanned five and did not allow a walk. Holli Cheek suffered the loss.

Shepherd improves to 20-19 overall, 13-6 in WVIAC action, while WVU-Tech drops to 3-22, 2-21. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Concord for a noon doubleheader.

NOTES: Freshman Mia Zappacosta had three hits on the day to set a new Shepherd single season mark for hits with 54. She breaks the old mark of 53 set by Leslie Miller in 1991. Doubleheader action scheduled at Alderson-Broaddus on Friday has been cancelled.
