SHEPHERD DROPS 3-2 CONTEST IN FIRST ROUND ACTION
VIENNA, W. Va. -- West Virginia State held off Shepherd College for a 3-2 victory in first day action of the WVIAC Softball Tournament in Vienna.
Trailing 3-0, Shepherd rallied for two runs in the sixth inning. Sara Rosboschil (Hayfield/ Lorton, VA) reached base on an error and Jennifer Canby (Martinsburg (Wheeling Jesuit)/Martinsburg, WV) singled. The pair scored on a two-run double off the bat of Brooke Small (Herndon/Herndon, VA). Mara Kafton (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV) added a pair of hits for the Rams. State starter Staci Kinder earned the win for the Yellow Jackets. Jessica Brown, winner of 21 games for State, worked the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up the save. Karen Burnette (Tabb/Yorktown, VA) suffered the loss for the Rams. Shepherd falls to 7-23 overall, while State improves to 32-12.
