Karen Burnette fired a two-hitter in a 1-0 win in game one.

SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH WEST VIRGINIA STATE

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University and West Virginia State split WVIAC doubleheader action at Shepherd on Sunday afternoon. Shepherd took a 1-0 win in game one, while West Virginia State earned a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Senior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) tossed a two-hitter to pace the Rams in game one. She fanned seven and walked only two. Jessica Godby (2Ks, 2BB) took the loss for State.

Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) scored the game's only run in the first inning. Canby walked and moved to second on a walk by senior shortstop Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs, WV). She moved to third on a single by junior third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) and scored on an outfield error.

Zappacosta went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Alisha Shull and Jessica Hamilton each singled for the Yellow Jackets.

Sammi Kinder tossed a two-hitter for State in the nightcap. Burnette took the loss for the Rams.

West Virginia State broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Casey Crawford doubled and scored on a single from Charli Small.

State added a run in the sixth when Kim Darby led off with a single and later scored from third on a double steal.

Freshman second baseman Rebekah Walsh (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) and sophomore Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) each singled for the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 16-18, 7-3 in WVIAC action, while State is now 19-13-1, 6-2. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Columbia Union for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
