SHEPHERD SWEPT BY STATE

INSTITUTE, W. Va. -- West Virginia State College swept Shepherd College in WVIAC softball action with a pair of 8-0 victories at State on Saturday afternoon.

Jessica Brown tossed a two-hitter to lead the Yellow Jackets in game one. Shepherd starter Megan Hall (Randolph-Henry/Keysville, VA) dropped to 1-3 with the loss.

State used seven hits to plate six runs in the third inning and added a pair of runs in the fifth to close out the win.

Jenna Kirk (Fauquier/Warrenton, VA) and Carrie Cline (Central/Edinburg, VA) each singled for the Rams.

Cathy Driggs matched Brown's performance with a two-hitter of her own in the nightcap. Karen Burnette (Tabb/Yorktown, VA) took the loss and dropped to 1-4 on the year.

State scored single runs in the first and third innings and erupted for six runs in the fifth to gain the sweep.

A single by Cline and double from Beth Vickers (Jefferson/Kearneysville, WV) were the only hits allowed by Driggs.

Shepherd falls to 2-11, 0-8 in conference play. The Rams return to action on Sunday at WVU-Tech. Doubleheader action is slated to begin at noon.
