RAMS SPLIT WITH STATE

Freshman Christee Anderson evened her record at 4-4 with a complete game win in game one.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd College split a doubleheader with West Virginia State in softball action at Shepherd on Saturday afternoon. The Rams took a 10-2 win in game one and State earned a split with an 8-6 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd pounded out 13 hits in game one en route to a 10-2 victory. Mara Kafton (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV), Angie Jeffries (Fauquier (FCC)/The Plains, VA), and Jessica Sturgill (North Harford/Whiteford, MD) each had three hits to lead the Rams. Sturgill and Amanda Fleming (Hancock/Hancock, MD) drove in three runs apiece, while Shea Sirbaugh (Berkeley Springs/Berkeley Springs, WV) and Vickie McGilton (University/Morgantown, WV) each had two RBIs.

Christee Anderson (Martinsburg/Kearneysville, WV) went the distance to even her record at 4-4. She recorded six strikeouts and allowed only one earned run in six innings. State starter Jessica Brown took the loss despite fanning nine Ram batters.

State used a six-run fifth inning to move past the Rams in the nightcap. Sheena Smithers smacked a three-run homer to highlight the inning.

Shepherd rallied with three runs in the sixth and added two more in the seventh, before Brown came in to get final out to preserve the win for the Jackets.

State starter Deanna Booth gained the win, while Shepherd's Becky Porter (James Buchanan/Chambersburg, PA) dropped to 6-3 on the season with the loss.

Sarah Adams had three hits to pace State.

Shepherd moves to 11-12, 7-7 in WVIAC play, while State moves to 11-11, 5-3. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Fairmont State for a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
