SHEPHERD ELIMINATED FROM WVIAC TOURNAMENT
SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. -- Shepherd College dropped a pair of 6-4 contests as the Rams were eliminated in second day action of the WVIAC Softball Tournament. Shepherd fell to West Liberty and Fairmont State by the identical scores.
Melanie Okun (Damascus/Damascus, MD), and Chrissy Ashley (Loudoun Valley/Lovettsville, VA) each added three hits to pace the Rams against West Liberty. Vickie McGilton (University/Morgantown, WV) and Amanda Fleming (Hancock/Hancock, MD) each had two hits.
West Liberty used a four-run fourth inning to take a 5-4 advantage. The Hilltoppers added an insurance run in the the fifth for the 6-4 triumph.
McGilton went 4-for-4 with a run and two RBI to lead the Rams against Fairmont. She also had a home run and a double. Angie Jeffries (Fauquier (FCC)/The Plains, VA) added two hits.
Fairmont rallied from a 4-3 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to gain the victory.
Christee Anderson (Martinsburg/Kearneysville, WV) suffered the losses in both games to fall to 9-7 on the year. She recorded six strikeouts on the day.Shepherd topped all teams in the tournament with a .350 team batting average. McGilton was the top hitting individual with an impressive .733 batting average. She also led the tournament in hits (11), runs (7), RBI (7), home runs (3), and doubles (3). Okun added the second best batting average with a .538 mark. She was 7-for-13 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI.
Shepherd completes its season with an 18-16 record. The Rams finished the year with a winning record for the first time since the 1995 season.
