SHEPHERD WINS TWO IN FIRST ROUND ACTION
SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. -- Shepherd College won its first two games in first day action of the WVIAC Softball Tournament at Veteran's Memorial Park in Summersville. Shepherd handed WVU-Tech an 8-5 loss and later earned a 12-2 victory over West Virginia State.
Vickie McGilton (University/Morgantown, WV) went 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBI to lead the Rams against Tech. She also had a home run and a double. Amanda Fleming (Hancock/Hancock, MD), Jessica Sturgill (North Harford/Whiteford, MD), Melanie Okun (Damascus/Damascus, MD), and Chrissy Ashley (Loudoun Valley/Lovettsville, VA) each added two hits to pace a 13-hit Ram attack.
Becky Porter (James Buchanan/Chambersburg, PA) tossed a complete game victory to improve to 8-4.
Shepherd used a seven-hit attack and took advantage of seven errors en route to a 12-2 win over State in game two.
Amanda Butts (Musselman/Gerarrdstown, WV) went 2-for-3 with a solo home to lead the Rams. Shea Sirbaugh (Berkeley Springs/Berkeley Springs, WV) went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI, while Sturgill added a 2-for-3 effort and drove in two runs. Christee Anderson (Martinsburg/Kearneysville, WV) went the distance to gain her ninth win of the year. She recorded six strikeouts in the five inning contest.Shepherd improves to 18-14 overall and will face the winner of the West Liberty-Wheeling Jesuit game at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
