RAMS DROP A PAIR TO WESTERN MARYLAND

Freshman Christee Anderson has recorded a total of 10 strikeouts in her last two outings for the Rams.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd College dropped a doubleheader to Western Maryland College in softball action at Shepherd on Thursday afternoon. The Green Terror earned a 6-1 win in game one and gained the sweep with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Western Maryland scored five runs in the first inning en route to victory in game one. Heather Sinclair's two-run single highlighted the inning.

Caitlin Burns went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Green Terror. Western Maryland pitcher Samantha Abrams allowed only two hits to gain the win.

A double by Jessica Sturgill (North Harford/Whiteford, MD) and a single from Angie Jeffries (Fauquier (FCC)/The Plains, VA) were the only hits for the Rams. Jeffries scored Shepherd's only run in the sixth when she scored from first base with the aid of a Green Terror throwing error.

Shepherd jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. Jeffries led off the third with a single and came home on a triple from Mara Kafton (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV). Melanie Okun (Damascus/Damascus, MD)followed with a single to plate Kafton.

Pitcher Kim Camponelli's two-run single in the fourth highlighted a four-run inning for the Green Terror to put Western Maryland ahead, 4-2.

The Green Terror added a run in the sixth when Camponelli doubled to score Kristen Barrick, who led off the inning with a single.

The Rams rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Shea Sirbaugh (Berkeley Springs/Berkeley Springs, WV) led off with a single. After Amanda Fleming (Hancock/Hancock, MD) flied to left, Sirbaugh was forced at second on a fielder's choice by Sturgill. Vickie McGilton (University/Morgantown, WV) belted a two-run homer to left to get the Rams to within one run at 5-4. Camponelli fanned Amanda Butts (Musselman/Gerrardstown, WV) to end the game.

Sturgill, McGilton, and Jeffries each had two hits to lead the Rams.

Shepherd falls to 9-10, while Western Maryland improves to 8-2. The Rams return to action on Monday when they host West Liberty for a 2:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
