SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH CHARLESTON

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split doubleheader softball action with University of Charleston at Charleston on Friday afternoon. Shepherd blanked Charleston, 3-0, in game one and Charleston rallied for a 2-1 win in 10 innings in the nightcap.

Senior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) scattered four hits in game one and fanned five to improve to 6-4 on the year. Andrea Lewis struckout seven in a losing cause for the Golden Eagles.

Shepherd opened the scoring in the first inning when sophomore outfielder April Przygocki (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS).

The Rams added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) singled, sophomore outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) reached base on a fielder's choice, and freshman catcher Amanda Orkoskey (Wheeling, WV/Wheeling Central Catholic HS) followed with a two-run double.

Shepherd grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap when Przygocki (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) singled and later scored on an RBI-single from Zappacosta.

Charleston tied the game in the sixth on three consecutive singles.

Michelle Sabelhaus, who had four hits on the day, had the game-winning hit on the 10th inning for the Golden Eagles.

Zappacosta and senior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) led the Rams with two hits each.

Lewis gained the win for Charleston and posted nine strikeouts. Freshman reliever Tiffany Jones (Pasadena, MD/Northeast HS) took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 13-17, 4-2 in WVIAC play, while Charleston is now 11-12, 5-3. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host WVU Tech for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
