SHEPHERD SWEEPS CHARLESTON

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept University of Charleston in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd on Thursday. The Rams took game one with a 8-0 triumph in five innings and rallied for a 4-3 win in the nightcap. The sweep runs Shepherd's winning streak to 12 games.

Junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) stifled the Golden Eagles with a three-hit shutout in game one. Burnette struck out five and did not allow a walk. Charleston starter Jenna Markham took the loss.

Junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and an RBI in game one. Sophomore third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) added a 2-for-3 outing with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Freshman Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) was 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.

Sims singled home freshman outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Rams to a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

Junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS), sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS), and Sims each had two hits to pace the Rams in the nightcap.

Andrea Gregory and Lauren Newton each had a pair of hits to lead Charleston.

Sims went the distance for the Rams and improved to 2-1. Michelle Sabelhaus took the loss for the Golden Eagles.

Shepherd improves to 12-5, 6-0 in WVIAC action, while Charleston falls to 15-10, 6-4. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to WVU Tech.
