SHEPHERD GOES TO 4-0 IN CONFERENCE PLAY

CHARLESTON, WV--Shepherd College swept University of Charleston in WVIAC softball action at Charleston on Saturday. The Rams smacked 14 hits en route to a 9-3 in game one and gained the sweep with a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

Erika Nagy (Damascus, MD/ Damsacus HS) went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and four runs batted in to lead the Rams in game one. Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, while Kelly Carpenter (Waynesboro, PA/ Waynesboro HS), Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS), and Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) each added a pair of hits.

Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) recorded five strikeouts and picked up her first win of the season. Krystal Brown, who led Charleston with a pair of hits, took the loss.

Canby had a home run and a single and drove in two runs to pace the Rams in the nightcap. Nagy added a double and a single, while Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) hit a two-run single to key a five-run outburst in the third inning.

Lauren Newton went 2-for-4 to lead Charleston.

Megan Hall (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry HS) scattered eight hits and recorded seven strikeouts to gain the win, while Amber Snyder suffered the loss for UC.

Shepherd improves to 5-10, 4-0 in conference play. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they host Fairmont State for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
