RAMS SPLIT WITH UC
CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Freshman pitcher Becky Porter (James Buchanan/Chamberburg, PA) scattered five hits in the nightcap to give Shepherd College (6-5, 4-4 WVIAC) a split with the University of Charleston (5-5, 1-1 WVIAC) in doubleheader softball action at Charleston on Saturday. Charleston earned a 9-2 victory in the first game, while the Rams gained the split with an 8-1 win in the game two.
Shepherd outhit Charleston, 11-10, in game one, but the Golden Eagles took advantage of four Ram errors en route to a 9-2 win.
Shepherd's only runs came in the first inning when Shea Sirbaugh (Berkeley Springs/Berkeley Springs, WV) singled and scored on a Vickie McGilton (University/Morgantown, WV)triple. Amanda Fleming (Hancock/Hancock, MD) followed with a single to plate McGilton.
McGilton had three hits to lead the Rams in game one. Sirbaugh and Chrissy Ashley (Loudoun Valley/Lovetttsville, VA) each added two hits.
Kelly Rose had three hits to pace the Charleston attack.
A strong pitching performance from Porter and a 13-hit attack lifted the Rams to an 8-1 win in the nightcap.
Porter tossed a complete game five-hitter to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Jessica Sturgill (North Harford/Whiteford, MD) had three hits and scored two runs to lead the Rams at the plate. Mara Kafton (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV), Sirbaugh, and Ashley each contributed two hits.
Shepherd will continue on the road to face Concord on Sunday. Doubleheader action will begin at 11:00 a.m.
