WALSH, JONES FIRE NO-HITTERS; SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SWEEPS WVU TECH

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Freshmen pitchers Rebekah Walsh (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) and Tiffany Jones (Pasadena, MD/Northeast HS) fired back-to-back no-hitters as Shepherd University swept doubleheader softball action with WVU Tech at Shepherd on Saturday afternoon. Shepherd took an 8-0 win in game one and pounded out 15 hits in an 18-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Walsh allowed only one base runner in game one when Tech's Becky Vaughn walked in the fourth inning.

Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) and junior third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) each went 3-for-3 to pace the Rams. Walsh and sophomore outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) added two hits each. Griffin drove in three runs with a pair coming via a two-run blast to left field in the fifth.

Walsh improved to 4-1 on the year, while Alexis Cox took the loss for the Golden Bears.

Shepherd plated 13 runs in the first inning of the nightcap to cruise to the win in the nightcap. A grand slam by Griffin, a two-run double by Jodie Sites (Moorefield, WV/Moorefield HS/Potomac State), and two-run singles by Jones and senior shortstop Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) highlighted the rally.

The Rams added five more runs in the second on five hits and two Tech errors to extend the lead to 18-0.

Griffin went 2-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Rams. Sites added a 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Canby, Zahnow, Zappacosta, and sophomore outfielder April Przygocki (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) each added a pair of hits.

Jones improved to 1-1 on the year as she gained her first collegiate win. She fanned two and walked two. Ashley Lundsford took the loss for WVU Tech.

Shepherd improves to 15-17, 6-2 in WVIAC play. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host West Virginia State for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
