RAMS SWEEP TECH

MONTGOMERY, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept WVU Tech in WVIAC softball action at WVU Tech on Saturday. The Rams took game one with a 15-0 triumph in five innings and were awarded a 14-0 win after two innings of action in the nightcap.

Sophomore pitcher Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) limited the Golden Bears to five singles in game one.

Sophomore third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) and sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) each went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams. Zappacosta also added double. Freshman outfielder Bridget Merceruio (Falling Waters, WV/Martinsburg HS) had a 2-for-4 effort, while freshman Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) belted a pinch-hit home run.

Shepherd plated 14 runs in the first two innings of the nightcap. After both teams agreed to not to continue play, the umpires awarded the Rams the victory.

Junior pitcher Megan Hall (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry HS) improved to 2-1 for the Rams.

Shepherd improves to 14-5, 8-0 in WVIAC action. Conference doubleheader action slated for Sunday at West Virginia State has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
