Mia Zappacosta went 4-for-5 to help her own cause in Shepherd's 7-6 win over State.

SHEPHERD AND STATE SPLIT SOFTBALL ACTION

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV-- Shepherd University split with West Virginia State in WVIAC doubleheader softball action at Shepherd on Sunday afternoon. The Rams edged State, 7-6 in 10 innings in game one, while the Jackets gained the split with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) went 4-for-5 to lead the Rams to victory in game one. Zappacosta drove in the tying run in the 10th and scored the game-winner when Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) singled to left field.

Zappacosta fanned five in the complete game win to improve to 6-5, while Stacy Kinder took the loss for State.

State came back to take the nightcap behind a four-hit pitching effort by Kinder.

The Yellow Jackets got RBI-doubles from Sheena Smithers and Kim Darby and an RBI-triple from Alisha Shull in a three-run fourth inning.

Shepherd's only run in the nightcap came when Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) singled, stole second, and later scored on a double off the bat of Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS).

Lauren Ward singled home Shannon Pack in the seventh for the game's final run.

Angel Bailey went 2-for-3 to lead State.

Leighty fell to 2-3 on the year for the Rams with the loss.

Shepherd moves to 15-19 overall, 8-6 in WVIAC action, while State is now 16-16, 8-6. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Salem International for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
