SHEPHERD SOFTBALL WINS PAIR AT SNOWBIRD TOURNAMENT

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- Shepherd University picked up a pair of wins at the Snowbird Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Wednesday. Shepherd rallied for a 6-2 win over Alvernia and later held off Hilbert for a 6-4 triumph.

Sophomore infielder Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) led the Rams with 2-for-3 outing at the plate against Alvernia, with a triple and a two-run homer. Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) added a 3-for-4 effort with a run scored.

Danielle Machamer went 2-for-3 to lead the Crusaders.

Junior pitcher Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) scattered three hits to improve to 2-2 for the Rams. Beth Jablonowski took the loss for Alvernia.

The Rams scored four runs in the second inning en route to a 6-4 win over Hilbert in the second game. Senior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) smacked a bases-loaded double to plate three runs to highlight the inning.

Canby went 3-for-4 with a run scored and junior outfielder Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) added a 2-for-4 performance. Sims continued her standout play with a 2-for-3 effort with a triple and a single and two runs scored.

Jeannette Testa smacked a pair of hits to lead the Hawks.

Senior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) improved to 2-3 on the season with the complete game win, while Kate Moyer took the loss for Hilbert.

Shepherd (4-7) will take on Mansfield and Utica in final day tournament action on Thursday.
